Bezos has no place at the MET or in art. Money (capitalism, really) is destroying art, fashion, and culture. And I'm glad some celebrities made that a conversation last night, like Janelle Monae and Sarah Paulson.
I love hearing your insight to this topic! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and reading my work. I would agree with the idea that something meant to focus on art should not be so heavily by billionaires.
Thank you so much for reading I will be sure to check yours out as well! I agree there is a certain difference in this this year and whether we attribute it to the billionaire sponsors or something else, it does feel off
What a thought provoking article. I would just like to add my two cents. Most these events such as the met gala are funded by billionaires who know little to nothing about fashion but what they get out of it is influence. As much as we would like to think that the met gala is about creativity and fashion as a medium and that's all that matters it's simply not true. Unfortunately for these events to take place, funding is needed. This is not something new it has always happened it's just that now it's a bit more visible. The two things can be true at once. People like Bezos and Sanchéz have no place at the met gala because what they stand for is the complete opposite for what fashion and art actually is. However for these kinds of events to keep on existing and maintaing the image and impact it has had on society all these years, it needs funding(again, thank you capitalism). I think as a society we need to start acknowledging that things aren't as simple as they seem. ( I think all of this was highlighted in the article, this is just my understanding and interpretation of it) So sorry for the long comment.
Never apologize for a long comment haha!! I loved reading your thoughts and I couldn’t agree more. I think it’s important to see both sides whether we agree with them or not, because for events like this to exist there is so much more needed than some “pretty dresses”. While I want the designers to have a space to show case such immense talent, I think knowing that the event is controlled by someone so far removed from the creativity and talent just takes away from the essence of the event and what it means.
lovely piece as always! also what Bezos stands for, destruction, is so disharmonious with the MET which represents art and creation!! I think that’s why there is so much turmoil. Would love to know your thoughts!:)
Queen Nadine you have spoken again and I couldn’t agree more!!! It feels so disingenuous to what the MET actually represents and I think it has removed some of the joy I felt rating dresses and watching the red carpet
